Vitamin B12
What You Need to Know

The fact is that vitamin B12 deficits increase with the aging process for millions of people. This is one of the most important facts that you can know, because without B12 your body can’t function properly. Here are some possible symptoms of a B12 deficiency state, however do not allow this to occur as being B12 deficient can result in permanent long lasting effects.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can include:

·         Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
·         Insomnia
·         Loss of memory
·         Dizziness
·         Lack of balance
·         Depression
·         Digestive problems
·         Eye problems
·         Headaches
·         Inflamed tongue
·         Neurological damage
·         Ringing in the ears

In the Journal of Neurology in 2008, the scientist showed the lowest levels of B12 in the research subjects had the most dementia and actually had smaller brain size (volume). There are just some things we don’t want to get smaller with age and I think we can all agree that the brain tops the list for most people. Well, if there is no better reason to consider daily B12 supplementation, there it is, “brain protection”.

We are all at risk of B12 deficits, yet we can really stack the deck against us if we are vegetarians, use acid blockers for acid reflux, have stomach disorders, suffer from diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome, have Celiac disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Chron’s Disease or Colitis). Yet, even if you are a meat eater, with a great constitution, excellent GI tract health and never use acid blockers you are still at risk. How? Well as we get older at least 50% of us have a decrease in stomach acid and thus we can’t absorb B12 as well as when we are young.

Summary:
Vitamin B12 is something I find to be low in many of my patients, I routinely look at the size of patients red blood cells called the MCV, and if it is above 90, I start wondering about B12 levels. Even if you have had your B12 levels measured and have been told that you fall within the normal range, ask this question of your doctor, “what is the normal based on?” As I tell my patients, my expectation of them is that they are better than normal. The normal (average) person is tired, prematurely aging and often in a sad state of affairs. Join the fight to stay as young as possible, maximize your genetic capacity and don’t accept your chronological age as your age, rather embrace your biological age, which can be impacted with a good diet, exercise, stress reduction and wisely chosen supplements.
