  Uterine Fibroids

Uterine Fibroids –
What Every Woman Needs to Know about Uterine Health

Every 10 minutes, 12 hysterectomies are performed in the United States. Three quarters of all hysterectomies performed are due to uterine fibroids. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 80% of all women have uterine fibroids tumors called leiomyomas. Most women usually have no symptoms and only one in four women end-up requiring medical treatment.

Some of the common symptoms of uterine fibroids are abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, constipation, and lower back pain. Other symptoms are urinary incontinence, swollen abdomen, and infertility. Because fibroids are estrogen dependent, women who are pregnant, on birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy may be at greater risk of developing fibroids. Your health provider typically finds fibroids during a routine manual pelvic exam.

Some of the treatment options include surgery to remove just the fibroid (myomectomy), cutting off the blood supply that feeds the fibroid (uterine arterial embolization), or removal of the uterus containing the fibroids (hysterectomy). Women need to understand all the risks associated with a hysterectomy before choosing this as a treatment option. Some of these risks include early menopause, vaginal dryness, and decreased sex drive to name a few. For women who still want to have children or are close to menopause, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists medications are used to try and halt the growth of fibroids.

Some medical providers prescribe natural progesterone for women suffering from excessive bleeding due to fibroids to help them restore hormonal balance from too much estrogen.

Eating certain foods daily – legumes, beans (adzuki beans), broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, and freshly ground flax seeds can help remove these excess estrogens naturally.

It has also been recommended by leading medical experts that everyone can benefit from taking a high-quality and complete daily multi-vitamin. Very few people actually eat a sufficiently healthy and broad diet to ensure the adequate intake of nutrients for all the biochemical processes necessary to not just sustain the human body but to help it truly thrive.

Summary
If you suffer from fibroids, it is important to understanding all your treatment options. For women who bleed excessively and feel tired, see you doctor for some blood work to determine if you are anemic. Becoming a well-informed patient is the best method for offsetting more serious health problems in the future.
