Allergies affect millions of people every year. 10 percent of the population in the United States has allergies!  14 million visits to medical doctors occur because of rhinitis, a type of allergy (inflammation of the nose or runny nose).  (*It is estimated that 22% percent of the world population suffer from some form of allergic disease).

What is an allergy? An allergy is when your body perceives a foreign protein as something that is harmful and often causes inflammation. Your immune system has to pick up the pace to fight against these allergens. Allergens could be a pollen, grass, cat or dog hair or mold.

If you suffer from allergies and rhinitis, you would also have headaches, tiredness and fatigue, apart from the normal symptoms associated with rhinitis. People get a runny nose every once in a while, but what we need to avoid are allergies that are affecting the quality of our lives. You want vitality and vigor, and if allergies are robbing you of that, you need to improve your health.

You also need to realize that your airways are being affected because of inflammation. You’re not getting the oxygen levels to fuel mind and body and you are in disequilibrium. Allergies also show that your immune system is overwhelmed. These allergies are slowly, but surely, eroding away at your health.

Allergies can be seasonal and year-round and may have different causes. There are two types of allergens: environmental and food.

Here are some simple tips to prevent allergies from occurring or getting worse:

Wash your hair before you go to bed. You could get extra exposure to that little bit of dust or pollen that gets you sneezing, your nose running and your eyes watering if you sleep with your hair unwashed. You would be subjecting yourself to 8 hours of further inoculation.

Don’t use down pillows or comforters. These are breeding grounds for dust mites and allergens.

Keep your pets off the bed. Pets are nice to cuddle with, but during allergy season, they may carry pollen and other allergens when they go from outdoors to indoors. They may inoculate your furniture and home environment.

Avoid food allergens. It is important to make the right food choices. For example, a patient that is allergic to garlic can reap a whole lot of health benefits if he or she avoids garlic. The patient’s vision may improve, weight may go down, he or she may feel more energetic and have increased athletic performance. Also remember that food allergies combined with environmental allergies equal a bigger problem.

Get an IGG test. An IGG test is a simple finger stick test. You can do it at home and send it to a national lab. An IGG test can help you discover if you’re allergic to the most common foods in the American diet.

Here are six basic supplements to fight allergies:

Quercetin. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid. Bioflavonoids are present in oranges, lemons, and limes. These are things that are important to stabilize your MAST cells, which contain histamine. If you degranulate or you release that histamine from your MAST cells, you will need an antihistamine. Quercetin helps stabilize that membrane to prevent the release of histamine.

Bromelain. Bromelain is derived from pineapple extract and brings down inflammation in your body. Bromelain and Quercetin work well as a synergistic blend.

Vitamin C. Vitamin C is helpful for stress and we all should consume more of it! Vitamin C is often found in fruits such as oranges, limes and lemon. The average American consumes only 11 percent of the fruits and vegetables that they should, according to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).  Vitamin C releases a natural antihistamine in the bloodstream and is very essential in cleaning up some of that released histamine.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). NAC breaks down mucus. It is a precursor building block for glutathione, an important antioxidant in plants that prevents damage to cellular components. NAC is the number one antioxidant in your body. When you supplement with NAC, you are not only supporting your body and connective tissues, you’re actually protecting your body against free radical damage while working on your allergies and symptoms.

Nettles. Stinging nettle has been studied for sinusitis. In a double-blind placebo study (meaning both the doctor and patient weren’t aware of the study) nettles proved to be helpful when inflammation of the sinuses occur.

Grapeseed extract. Used in clinical practices around the world for allergies, grapeseed extract is helpful in fighting allergens.

Don’t watch allergies erode away at your health. Take charge of your health, get a food allergy test and take your supplements.
