Healthy Living

When considering the meaning of “Health” you should include the concept of “Wellness”. Wellness means to live life to its full potential by enhancing each aspect; physical, mental, and social well-being. There is a misconception that being Healthy means not being sick in the present moment. This is a fallacy. Many health authorities state “being healthy is the accumulation of a mentally, physically, and socially complete person”.

Six Dimensions of Healthy Living

Your personal Health & Wellness encompasses six dimensions of internal and external needs, and it would be wise to cultivate them. This should give you a good idea of why the concepts of “Health & Wellness” are more comprehensive than whether you are sick or not.

Emotional – Recognizing and accepting the type of person you are can free you up to enjoy yourself and life in a more positive light. Instead of worrying or obsessing about what not to do, you can release that anxiety and begin to not only cope but cultivate healthy ways of managing stress.

Environmental – We all live in an expansive and often awe inspiring world. To recognize this and appreciate the air you breathe, the water you drink, or a beautiful sunset, can bring a calm and connectivity to yourself. These little moments can bring you back to reality as opposed to drifting off in a self absorbed dreamland.

Intellectual – When you partake in activities or experiences that expand your knowledge and stimulate your interests, you begin to feel a sense of yourself. Whether it’s reading a book or partaking in an intellectual conversation, this “return to self” can be rejuvenating.

Occupational – It is quite unfortunate that many people are willing to settle for an occupation that does not allow them to express their individuality or creativity. For those individuals that have, they can attest to the fact that contributing at work can be deeply rewarding.

Physical – Quite often people need a feeling of self-discipline. Being physically active can provide that sense of accomplishment and with achieving your goals you begin to feel good about yourself and where you are in your life. Exercise has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant qualities and the more you do it the more you want to.

Social – It is undeniable that doing a good deed generally makes you feel good. And when you benefit others it can make you feel connected to your community. The more involved you are with others the more supported you will feel and this can satisfy your need to be connected to others.

Self-Evaluation

Given the above information, you may begin to get some ideas of what you may want to include in your life. Whether you have a clear idea or not ask yourself, “How satisfied are you with this wellness dimension in your own life?” (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not satisfied, and 10 being completely satisfied.) If you answer truthfully than you can begin to look at ways of improving your numbers. For starters here is a few basic ways of starting on the road to Health and Wellness. For those areas in your life that you wish to better, begin incorporating the idea of ‘enhancement’. How can you enhance the Social dimension of your life? How about the Occupational dimension?

Here are a few ways of enhancing Wellness:

  • Start and maintain your health prevention plan, i.e., gynecology, breast, prostate, and eye exams, dental visits. Then, take it to the next level by proactively seeking alternative treatment and therapies to explore different options.
  • Eat a well balanced diet, avoiding processed and preserved foods, and refined sugars. Then, take it to the next level by nourish your body by using supplements effectively, and avoid allergen triggering foods which include hidden food allergens.
  • Exercise regularly and within your own parameters. Then, take it to the next level by sticking to your exercise plan, it will help you create your own positive self-image and help you cope when times call for inner strength.

These are basic suggestions and hopefully they can give you an idea of how to improve your overall well-being. Incorporating your friends and family can be great motivation for yourself and them. The more creative you become with implementing your new healthy lifestyle the more time you will have and the better you will feel.

Summary

Health and Wellness does not refer to life in-between colds and flu’s. Health & Wellness together are an affirmative and proactive approach to creating your life to its fullest potential. For the majority of us, it can be easy to let ourselves be swept up into a dreary and mundane life. It is important to fulfill your basic human needs; food, water, and shelter. However, the other areas that satisfy you mental, emotional and physical will ensure you are living a complete existence. Those that feel a great sense of contribution to this world will wish to continue their positive behavior. Understanding what you need in your life and how to make it happen can start you out on the right path. Begin by eating healthy foods and abstaining from foods that do you harm, exercise regularly and keep yourself motivated, cultivate positive relationships with your family, friends, and yourself. By actively contributing to your own wellness, you can influence those around you. You may even become a role model for your children. Ultimately, you will attain the energy and vitality that you have had all along.
