Allergies

There are two common classifications of allergies: acute and chronic. If you have allergies year around and suffer from nasal congestion and phlegm you are likely suffering from chronic allergens either due to a constant or repetitive environmental or food allergen. Allergies or an allergic reaction can be severe or mild. A severe reaction can be as extreme as anaphylaxis shock, resulting in life threatening allergic symptoms. A mild reaction can be caused by anything from dust or pollen to poison ivy. Allergies are quite common and it is your body’s’ natural defense to an ‘invader’. Depending on your body’s’ response to this invader will indicate how severe of an effect it has on you. Many times allergies are acquired through genetics.

The market for over-the-counter products is extensive. There are times when these products may be useful, however prevention is still the only way of being one step ahead of allergens. Histamine is an amino-acid your body produces to signal your body’s immune system that there is an invader. It increases your mucous production and sneezing and coughing response. Many anti-histamine products are available to help block the body’s immune system from producing histamine. These products are another way to block your body from doing what it needs to get the invader out. However there are many things that can be done in your personal environment to limit your allergic reactions. Your first step should be to eliminate allergens from your home, work, and vehicle. This means you will have to determine what these offenders are if you don’t already know. Look around for potential culprits in your environment, such as new plants, changes in furniture, fabric softeners, clothing, hair and other personal products, pets, etc

Drive with your windows up and with your car cooling system set on re-circulate to avoid pulling in dust and pollen into your car. If your symptoms are worse with the change of seasons, plants blossoming or in damp weather, then make sure to wash your hair prior to going to sleep, to avoid taking a head of hair covered with pollen to bed with you.

Anyone suffering from allergies should also increase their water intake to 64 to 72 ounces of non-chlorinated water daily. If you don’t already have a chlorine filter for you home faucet and shower this is an important overall health investment. If you have ‘down or feather’ pillows and comforters, you can try sleeping without them for a couple of weeks to see if there is any improvement.

It is very important to identify your allergens and decrease inflammation and irritation that accompany allergies. Millions of North Americans suffer from sinusitis and allergies, yet the problem doesn’t stop with a runny nose or congestion, the inflammation can also be leading to increased risk of heart disease as well and premature aging.

It has also been recommended by leading medical experts that everyone can benefit from taking a high-quality and complete daily multi-vitamin. Very few people actually eat a sufficiently healthy and broad diet to ensure the adequate intake of nutrients for all the biochemical processes necessary to not just sustain the human body but to help it truly thrive.

If you suffer from allergies it may be something that you have done or changed in your home, auto, and work environment. By finding out what you are allergic to, you can make changes to limit the contact you have with said allergens. If you have extreme reactions you should seek medical attention to avoid life limiting situations.
