Acne in the Teenage Years

The teenage years are full of great opportunity to grow as a person and expand horizons. Yet it is also the time when acne, those nasty little (and sometimes BIG) blemishes decide to start popping up. Some interesting information that you may find helpful and wish to share with those you care about include the following:

  • White dots or horizontal lines on your nails can be a sign that you are running low on zinc, a mineral critical for healthy immune defenses and also processing hormones that are associated with acne in both males and females. Think of your fingernails like the rings of a tree, they reflect what the last 12 weeks of your nutritional and health status.
  • Another interesting way that your body often talks to you includes fine little raised (non-acne bumps) on the back of your upper arms and sometimes elsewhere. They kind of feel and look like permanent goose bumps, just a little smaller. This can often be a symptom of too low an intake of fish, nuts and seeds and other sources of healthy oils. Many of my patients will supplement with either fish oil or flaxseed oil to help their complexion.
  • The other helpful hints that my teen patients find important is to eat plenty of veggies, fresh fruit, go easy on eating too much meat (except for fish), and make sure their fiber intake is adequate to ensure their system eliminated toxins from the GI tract 2 to 3 times a day.

My acne-fighting suggestions are Zinc, Fish or Flax Seed Oil, lots of water and proper hydration, 5 to 7 servings of fresh fruits and veggies and avoid harsh soaps and treatments that are too drying to the skin.  It is also essential that a person with acne focus on purifying their diet.  If the skin is oily, rinsing the face with warm water without soap 3 times a day is important.  Additionally if skin is dry due to use of topical acne products this often worsens acne with something called rebound acne.  So avoid anything that dries the skin.

Reports say Diabetes is a Killer Epidemic on the Rise

In October 2010, the newspaper USA Today reported that by 2050, an astonishing 1 in 3 Americans may suffer from diabetes. The current number that is not much less tragic, is that Diabetes currently already impacts 1 in 10 Americans and it ranks as the 6th leading cause of death. Not only does it kill you, it slowly robs you of vitality, health and function, increasing risk of heart disease, stroke, blood pressure, cancer, blindness, kidney failure and dementia, to name a few. Diabetes basically affects all diseases of mankind with rare exception.

The sad thing is that the vast majority of us are walking around oblivious, thinking we have dodged the bullet, since we don’t have that label “diabetes”. Yet, pre-diabetes currently impacts 60 million Americans according to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. These are the same experts that warn us about such epidemics such as Swine Flu, and they report on the BIG STUFF, and pre-diabetes is HUGE STUFF. Why? Because Diabetes leads to a life of slow and initially silent, but eventually a dramatic deterioration of health.

We have supersized our soda pop and candy bars, and as a society as a whole, we have forgotten how to cook real food. If it is not in a box or frozen, we are at a loss. Sure, some folks still know how to cook, yet our youth are at a loss most of the time. They have been raised in challenging times. We need to instill them with how to eat, exercise, control stress and take cares of their bodies. If not, the predictions will come true. To think that this next generation may be the first not to live as long as we will is sad to say the least.

Each of can make a difference.
The USA Today headline was a wake up call, and this needs to be the daily news warning each and everyday until we make a difference and reverse this frightening trend. If we all forward this blog on to others, and add to it with our own common sense, we might just start to reach the level of impact where we can change the future of “healthcare in America”. Currently we have a “disease management system” – join me in transforming it into a “wellness management system”.
Like ancient Chinese physicians, modern doctors should get paid at the end of the year if they have kept us well. Now that is an interesting incentive! Whereas our current system is the more visits, the more pay… hmmm…

A Fathers’ Diet Will Impact His Pre-Born Children

A report in the October 20, 2010 issue of the journal, Nature, sheds huge light on an under-appreciated impact of “a fathers’ role” on his children of the future.

There is a first time for everything, and now researchers have discovered that if a father has a high-fat diet, it can increase the genetic susceptibility of his offspring to develop diabetes.

For years, a mother’s health prior to and during pregnancy has been known to impact the health of her child, now the responsibility is officially documented to be a shared “responsibility”.

I have long preached that fertility for both men and women is more than just the ability to become pregnant. Rather, true fertility is the ability to conceive and delivery an optimally-health baby. I addressed this issue in my book on enhancing fertility.

Though this study is just the first of many, there is no question more studies will be forthcoming, confirming that when it comes to becoming pregnant, that both men and women should eat healthy, take multi-vitamins, decrease stress and avoid toxins such as alcohol and cigarettes that add to toxic burden.

It takes fertile soil, a healthy seed and a nurturing environment for a flower to bloom. Likewise, the same applies to a baby.
