Men – Your Weight Helps Determine Prostate Heath and Therefore Life Expectancy

There is now yet another new reason for men to lose weight… your prostate health and your life. As a man, I am well aware of the risk of prostate cancer. It is estimated that 1 in 5 men will get it, with 1 in 35 men dying from it. It is time to muster up the energy and determination to lose weight not just for your heart, blood pressure and blood sugar, but to also lower your risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Researchers from the University of Hawaii have concluded that increased weight when men are younger, increases your risk of prostate cancer later in life.

This study involved the analysis of data on almost 84,000 men! They observed that excessive weight gain in young adulthood increased the risk of advanced and high-grade prostate cancers (the more dangerous kind) for white men. Whereas for black men, excessive weight gain as a young adult upped risks for less hazardous, localized and low-grade forms of the disease.

No matter what form of prostate cancer, neither form of prostate cancer is something you want to deal with! I recommend for my male patients to take zinc, selenium, a high quality fish oil, lycopene, vitamin D3 and a good Saw Palmetto product. Yet, controlling stress and weight are also BIG MUSTS. I know it is hard to get up after a long day and commit to exercise and health. Yet, it is up to you.

Low Sun Exposure and Vitamin D Levels Linked to Higher Death Risk

I have shared many times with great passion my heart-felt belief that vitamin D is a must for everyone that have low blood levels of vitamin D. Well here is even more reason to supplement with vitamin D.

“Low levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of dying from all causes by 150 per cent, suggests a recent study.”

The most recent study showed that women with vitamin D levels lower than 15.3 (range 20-100) were more likely to die from causes such as heart disease and cancer, than women with higher levels (above 27 ng/ml), according to findings published in Nutrition Research.

Scary Fact: 70 percent of my patients are below when I first measure their vitamin D levels, before we start supplementing them on a daily basis.

It has been shown that having adequate levels of vitamin D is important to control inflammation in the body that when not quenched accelerates premature aging and suffering.

The medical literature reports the link between vitamin D deficiency and osteopenia, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, fractures, common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases.

So, unless you work outside daily, and live at a latitude of 35 degrees or lower, which would be at the level of Atlanta or Los Angeles, then due to lower sun exposure you are at high risk of lower than optimal levels of vitamin D. The goal according to most “Wellness Doctors” is a blood level of 55 or higher, range 20-100. Also remember wearing an SPF sunscreen can help with protection of skin cancer, but it also blocks vitamin D production from sunlight exposure. So, protect your skin, but also protect your mortality with daily vitamin D3 supplementation is a strong preventive measure.
